Code.org Unveils Partnership with College Board to Bring Computer Science into High Schools Nationwide

Code.org has teamed up with The College Board in an effort to bring computer science into more high schools nationwide. Both groups will offer quality computer science class to 35 of the country’s largest school districts, with focus on encouraging women and minorities into the field of IT.

Code.org and The College Board are partnering in a new effort aimed at promoting computer science to America’s high schools. Both organizations are working to offer computer science classes to 35 of the country’s largest school districts, which Code.org co-founder Hadi Partovi considered as a significant step for the field of computer science.

College Board, a nonprofit group that administers standardized exams for college admission, would aid Code.org in funding teacher training to provide quality computer science education in U.S high schools. One of the goals of both groups is to encourage more women and minorities into the field of I.T, Polymnia Hadjipanayiotou of Education News reported.

Schools that use the new Preliminary SAT test for grades 8 and 9 are qualified to receive the curriculum, funding, and training necessary for the creation of programming classes. Partovi said the PSAT would allow them to easily identify students with aptitude for computer science, regardless of their demographics.

Despite the growing demand for computer science graduates, Sonali Kohli of Quartz observed that there is a shortage of coders. “There’d be more people to fill these jobs if there were more computer science graduates, and there’d be more graduates if more people could start the subject in high school,” Kohli wrote in a Quartz article last week.

“And yet it’s difficult to find a high-quality computer science class in American high schools, let alone a programming class.” Kohli added that information technology had the most number of job postings in the STEM field in 2013.

According to Education News, about 165,000 female students during the 2014 PSATs showed aptitude for computer science. Only 2.5 percent enrolled in an AP Computer Science course.

Meanwhile, only 4.7 percent of the 33,000 Hispanic and black students that showed a natural capability for coding enrolled for the course. “Low-income urban schools regularly assume ‘our kids can’t do it’ and school administrators often assume the girls can’t do computer science,” said Patrovi. “This will help dispelled these myths.”
