Trends Global Today: Bristol Palin calls off wedding to decorated Marine

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced on Facebook Monday that her daughter Bristol has called off this weekend's planned wedding to U.S. Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer.

"Bristol and Dakota couldn't be more thankful for the love and support of family and friends over the past months while preparing for their wedding," the former GOP vice presidential nominee wrote. "They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held."

Palin's post included a note from Bristol dismissing allegations that Meyer had been secretly married and not divorced. But the post did not provide more detail on why the wedding was called off.

Sarah Palin also included an image of a poster reading " Trust in God's timing. It's better to wait a while and have things fall into place than to rush and have things fall apart."

The couple had announced their engagement in March. As USA TODAY reported at the time:

Meyer, 26, was part of a pre-dawn patrol in the Afghan village of Ganjgal when two Marine platoons were ambushed by more than 50 enemy fighters firing rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and machine guns. He made five trips into the ambush zone to rescue wounded Afghan forces and recover the bodies of fallen Marines. President Obama presented him with the military's highest honor in 2011.

Palin, 24, had a third-place finish on Dancing with the Stars and starred in her own Lifetime reality show, Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp.
